VANS is a top manufacturer
of shoes and apparel targeted at
extreme sport enthusiasts. Founded by Paul Van Doren in 1966, and
originally known as the Van Doren Rubber Company, VANS skate shoes
and sneakers have enjoyed a continuous popularity in the surf and
skate community for 40 years. With the introduction of the Vans Era
shoes to cope with the skateboarding craze in the 1970s, VANS skate
shoes quickly became the footwear of choice among skate enthusiasts.
After a near-disaster expansion to include
other specialty sports such as baseball and basketball in the 1980s,
the VANS shoe company has since successfully diversified to other
extreme sports such as snowboarding and BMX bicycle racing. VANS
shoes are also popular in the punk rock community as a result of the
company sponsored VANS Warped Tour, a punk rock and extreme sports
festival that fist began in 1995.
Vans' most notable shoe over the years has arguably been the Van
slip-ons, introduced in 1979, and mostly responsible for
skyrocketing the popularity of VANS shoes nationwide. The casual
canvas Vans shoes have enjoyed a resurgence in recent years due to
the revival of old school trends. The VANS slip-ons were
immortalized by Sean Penn, who played a surfer dude wearing a pair
of VANS checkerboard slip-ons, in the
1982 teen flick Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
